Fighting fit! How to avoid pain in your workouts

Fighting fit! How to avoid pain in your workouts

Exercise is a fantastic way to build up the muscles around your joints, strengthening them and actually helping to heal joint pain, as well as preventing problems later in life. However, if not done properly your workout could be exacerbating any problems you already have, and causing you more pain than is necessary. Here are some ways to avoid this.

Wear the right shoes

Prepare for your workout from the ground up. You need running shoes which support your feet without being binding. Your centre of gravity, if you work in a sedentary job, is likely to be around the balls of your feet. Exercising moves this to the arch, which can be vulnerable to damage as it is a weaker area. Buy real runner’s shoes which have a lower arch and will provide you with a more substantial base.

Stay hydrated

Many people don’t realise that dehydration causes their sorest muscles and leaves them prone to injuries. If you are exercising then you should be drinking a lot of water. Dehydration not only causes muscle cramping and fatigue, but it also means your heart has to work harder, leaving you exhausted and your heart pounding. When you feel like this you’re prone to mistakes that could lead to severe injuries.

Don’t get into a routine

Perhaps you want rock-hard abs or unique arms. Whatever you’re trying to achieve in the gym, you won’t get there if you repeatedly work the same body parts. Work different areas each time you go to the gym to allow your muscles time to recover. Start slow and build up as well - if you’re going all out on your first gym visit, you’re going to injure yourself.

Look for other solutions to chronic pain

If you don’t see any improvement in a particularly painful area of your body, or it always hurts after working out, you should look into other options. The Wimbledon Chiropractic Sports Injury Clinic can work with you to find out the root cause of your pain and provide medication-free ways of rebuilding your joints and muscles to get you fighting fit again.

Dealing with back muscle pain

Dealing with back muscle pain

Back muscle injuries are exceptionally common, and we see patients regularly suffer from this condition.

Different back muscle injuries

Many different types of back muscle injuries can occur. Many patients experience strains by lifting heavy objects in an awkward position, which results in the muscle being overstretched beyond what it can take. Swelling and pain can occur, as well as other symptoms, such as difficulty in moving the lower back, increased pain with movement, muscle spasms, bruising and tenderness.

Muscle injuries can also occur due to joint dysfunction or a ligament sprain, muscle fatigue, poor sitting postures and weak, inefficient back muscles that lack expected contraction timing or endurance.

You need to see a specialist

If you are suffering from back pain, no matter how mild or severe, you need to book an appointment with a chiropractor, as this could be the onset of something much worse, and you certainly don’t want to take any risks with your health.

Some of the most common signs of a more severe injury include loss of bladder control, difficulty walking, altered reflexes, leg muscle weakness, numbers, and pins and needles, although symptoms differ from person to person, which is why professional help is a must.

The diagnosis stage

As you can see, there are many causes of back muscle injuries, which is why the diagnosis stage is so important. When you book an appointment with an experienced chiropractor, the first thing they will do is carry out a thorough assessment of your back, including diagnostic tests and an evaluation of your symptoms, so that they can come to an accurate conclusion regarding the root of the problem and the best course of treatment to follow.

They will put together a personalised treatment plan based entirely on your requirements and condition, including hand manipulations, exercises, and such. They will also give you all of the knowledge you need so that you can manage the condition carefully at home so that the problem does not get worse or re-occur again in the future.
